Dutch Oven Sourdough Chocolate Cake

             Dutch Oven Sourdough  

                   Chocolate Cake 

2/3        cup             shortening
1 2/3     cups            sugar
3           each            eggs
1           cup              sourdough start
2           cups             flour
2/3        cup               cocoa
2/3        teaspoon       baking powder
1 1/2     teaspoons     soda
1           teaspoon       salt
3/4        cup               water
1           teaspoon       vanilla
1           cup               chopped walnuts -- optional

Frosting:

6           ounces             cream cheese
4           Tablespoons     butter
1/2        teaspoon           vanilla
1           cup                   powdered sugar

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs on at a time beating after each addition. Stir in start. Mix together flour, cocoa, baking powder, soda and salt. Add alternately with water and vanilla. Grease and lightly flour a 12-inch Dutch oven. Pour the batter evenly into the Dutch oven. Bake with coals on top and bottom for 10-15 minutes, remove from coals and continue baking from top only for an additional 10-15 minutes. or until cake is done. Allow to cool for ten minutes, then invert on a cardboard round, foil covered. Cool thoroughly and frost with your favorite frosting.

Frosting:

Blend cream cheese, butter, vanilla, and powdered sugar together until smooth.
